Slowing down really is an art these days.

Spring time is my favorite season as everything starts blooming and birds are singing. I enjoy stepping outside to see all of the buds on my perennials, and just anticipate the colorful flowers that will soon emerge.

It’s a shame we can’t all take a lesson from nature, and not rush everything. I have tried to be better about this as the years go by. I used to think having a fibro-flare was my body’s way of telling me it was time to slow down and rest.

The Art of Slowing Down

These days it really is an art to slow down, be present, and live in the moment. Here are some ideas for you to take a few moments today to slow down:

  1. Appreciate the beauty around you. Maybe you notice the sunrise, sunset, or that field of flowers blooming on your drive to work. Don’t mindlessly drive your normal commute to work, rushing and speeding through lights only to wonder how you got there. Drive slower and notice your surroundings.
  2. Be present when engaging with others. Make your family dinner last a little longer by putting electronic devices on a time out and asking everyone how their day was. Have a device-free meeting at work so everyone is paying attention, engaged in conversation, and effectively communicating.
  3. Breathe. I try to do this once or twice a day. Take a minute to practice some deep breathing, and notice how it helps you slow down for that minute. Breathing techniques can also help you focus better, as well as control anxiety or anger.

Being busy may be the name of the game, but stress is optional. Try to take some steps to be present and engaged rather than rushing through your day. You might be surprised what you get accomplished!

  1. I really like your ideas! At present, I am not doing anything in particular… that being said, just getting over a flare of symptoms. When in increased pain, I do everything to shut out the world so my body can heal. Now to reconnect with life is a priority. I think being present is key. I want to engage in life again, routine, hubby time, blogging time, mindwork time… thanks for this post! Good reminders…

    1. Thanks for the kind words, Kim. I am having a flare as well, and slowing down is my best way to cope (barring curling up in bed and watching Netflix). Sometimes writing can be helpful, then other times I think it’s too much work for this tired body. Nonetheless I found some time this weekend to reconnect with writing, disconnect from my phone, and step outside and enjoy the spring blooms. 🙂
